This article is a breakdown of the terms Pieces, Eaches, and CPQ, what they refer to and the differences between them.

Pieces and Eaches are terms used to define the quantity of items that are associated with a product. The easiest way to think about it is that Pieces is the smallest division of the product, the Eaches is the sellable unit, and the CPQ is how many units are sold in a case of units.

1.) Pieces and Eaches

Pieces refers to the number of items that make up a single sellable unit. Sellable units are referred to as Eaches. This is what the user actually orders. For instance, consider a ream of paper: the ‘Each’ would be one (1), but each sellable unit would consist of 500 pieces of paper per ream. Therefore, the Pieces value would be 500 and the order unit would be Eaches.

User orders 1 ream of paper – Receives 1 ream of 500 sheets

2.) CPQ

CPQ stands for Case Pack Quantity. An example of this would be paper sold in cases of reams. Each ream has 500 Pieces and the reams are sold in cases of 10. Pieces would be 500, the CPQ would 10, and order unit would be Cases.  End users will be required to order in multiples of 10 when adding their order quantity to the shopping cart.

User orders 10 – Receive 1 case of 10 reams of 500 sheets

3.) Order Unit

Order Unit is either Eaches or Cases. This determines whether users can order per each or per case. Eaches is the sellable unit in increments of one (1). Cases is the sellable unit determined in the CPQ field. To continue with the paper example, setting the Order Unit to Eaches would make the reams orderable by the ream. Setting the Order Unit to Cases would make the reams only orderable by cases of 10 reams

4.) Unit of Measure

Unit of Measure allows customized package names to be applied to a part and displayed to the end user on the portal. You can substitute what Eaches are called with whatever unit of measure you like, such as Rolls, Bundles, Boxes, Cases etc.

To add Unit of Measure types:

  • Go to Part / Unit of Measure
  • Input the singular and plural values
  • The unit of measure options will then become available on parts to be assigned.
