Did You Know: Service Provider Initiated Single Sign-On

web to print marketing portals

Propago now supports service provider-initiated SAML sign-on for your clients. When using SSO (Single Sign-On) services, there are two methods for starting the sign-on process: IdP-initiated (Identity Provider) and SP-initiated (Service Provider). Previously, Propago only supported IdP-initiated single sign-on with SAML. We’re now happy to announce that we support both methods of sign-on initiation.

What does this mean? Essentially, Service Provider initiated SSO means that the login flow for end users starts on the Propago storefront login page, instead of your client’s third-party SSO site. So, a user can go to their storefront URL, click the Log In with SSO button, and then the sign on process will start. Our system will punch across to their identity provider, confirm the identity of the user, and then log them into their storefront.

For some, having this new SSO option won’t change much. We still fully support the IdP-initiated SSO method as always. But if you have clients or prospective customers who prefer or require SP-initiated SSO, this is a great addition to your offerings.

Benefit to the Customer

  • End users can login to their storefront using Single Sign-On without having to use your identity provider’s portal to initiate the login.

How It Works

You can set up a Service Provider Initiated SAML connection in the back end:

  • Go to Portals / Select a Customer.
  • Select the left-hand menu option SAML Setup.
  • From here, you’ll need to input the SAML setup information and upload the SAML partner’s metadata XML.
  • Click Save when done.

Reach out to us if you need help with a SAML setup.

Once the connection is created, users can click the Sign In with SSO button on their storefront login page. The system will initiate the sign on and go to their identity provider in the same window, then back to Propago to log them in.

Note: You can use screen definitions to label the Sign In with SSO button as you’d like.
