Did You Know you can now add Price Upcharges to Soft Proofing variables?

A new Price Upcharge option on Soft Proofing variables lets you add a per-unit amount to a SKU only when a user populates that variable during personalization. This keeps your base pricing clean while ensuring upgrades and embellishments price themselves—automatically—right in the proofing flow.
Simply put, this new feature allows you to attach an upcharge (e.g., +$10) to a Soft Proofing variable. When the buyer selects or fills that variable during personalization, the upcharge is added to the unit price of each item being ordered.
Propago’s web-to-print engine already lets you control what users can change and how they proof creative; now those same creative choices can drive pricing structure, without separate SKUs or the use of part attributes.
Benefits to the Client
- Works great for upgrades like extra graphic placements, special ink options, variable add-ons, and more.
- Easily change personalization options, such as with an image bank, without necessitating product re-configuration.
- Cleaner catalogs: Monetize highly customizable product options without exploding your SKU count.
Example: Apparel embellishments with a Grid Configuration
Imagine a screen-printed T-shirt with sizes and colors selected in a Grid Configuration. After choosing the desired sizes and colors and quantities, the end user clicks Personalize and is taken to the proofing page. They are prompted to choose a Design Style from a dropdown list:
- Front Chest Logo only — +$0 (base price only)
- Add Back Graphic — +$10 per shirt
- Add Sleeve Graphic — +$12 per shirt
- Add Back and Sleeve Graphic — +$22 per shirt
Depending on their choice, the user can then select a graphic from an image bank for the corresponding placements.
If the buyer picked five shirts at $25 (SM–XL) and one at $27 (2XL), then selecting Add Sleeve Graphic (+$12) yields:
- 5 × ($25 + $12) = 5 × $37 = $185
- 1 × ($27 + $12) = $39
- Order line total = $224
The upcharge applies per unit and stacks on top of whatever the base price is for each size/variant.
The crucial difference between a setup like this and something similar that is achieved with part configuration or part attributes is that the upcharge is not determined by which graphic(s) the user selects, only by their selection of which placements . This enables much more flexibility for customization while seamlessly ensuring the desired pricing structure is enforced and made clear to the user.
How It Works
- Open the product’s Soft Proofing project. Proofing -> Soft Proof Projects.
- Find the Variable you want to add an upcharge to.
- Enable Price Upcharge and enter the upcharge amount.
- To achieve a result like in the example above, each placement combination option (front only, front and add sleeve graphic, etc.) would be an image variable and would be assigned the appropriate upcharge amount. These variables would be hidden from the user until chosen, and the Design Style dropdown variable would simply drive the variable selection.
- Save the project.
This Price Upcharge feature seamlessly integrates with our existing soft proofing and product configuration tools, giving you greater control over your product pricing and simplifying the ordering process for your users.
This new feature builds upon our existing capabilities for creating user options on products, such as Part Attributes, which allow you to add options without creating separate SKUs. It also complements our Digital Asset Management (DAM) functionality, allowing users to select from pre-approved images in an Image Bank when personalizing products.
