Did You Know you can add and delete variables from a soft proofing project page?

Once a template for a variable part has been created in Pageflex and uploaded to Propago, the soft proofing project page for that template provides some editing abilities. You can add triggers to create conditional variables, link data sources like user data and global forms, and change certain properties of variables.

One of the more recently added functions is the ability to add and delete variables. This means it isn’t necessary to create a new soft proofing project whenever a client needs a variable added or removed. This time saving feature makes updating personalizable parts in Propago easier.

In addition, you can add variables to a soft proofing project that aren’t defined in the Pageflex project and use these variables as triggers. As an example, imagine an event flyer with a phone number variable. You want the phone number mask to only apply if the user is inputting a domestic number. You could add a variable to the soft proofing project that requires the users to choose either “Domestic” or “International” and set that variable as a trigger that alters the application of the phone number mask. This kind of effect can be created by adding a variable directly to the soft proofing project without doing anything in Pageflex.

Benefits to You

  • Update existing projects and add variables without having to upload a new soft proofing project.
  • Remove unwanted variables from soft proofing projects quickly.
  • Add variables not defined in the Pageflex file to use as variable triggers.

How It Works

To add a Pageflex variable to an existing soft proofing project, you’ll first need to create the variable in the Pageflex project. Then in the soft proofing project settings use the File View section to update the project file. Next, use the Add Pageflex Variable button and enter the variable’s name. Two things to note here:

  • For the variable to add correctly, the name you enter here must be identical to the name of the variable in the Pageflex project.
  • The Add Pageflex Variable feature only works with Text variables and Image variables.

To delete a variable from a soft proofing project, click the Delete Variable button in the header of the Variables section, then click the “X” button next to the variable.

As mentioned, you can also use the Add Pageflex Variable button without creating a new variable in the Pageflex project. This variable can be set up in the soft proofing project and used as a trigger for the behavior of other variables using the Manage Triggers function.
